LE GRAND CONCOURS: General Information
What is the “Grand Concours”?
Le Grand Concours (the National French Contest) is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students take a multiple-choice test and compete against students with a similar educational background for prizes including certificates, medals, books, dvds, trips, and scholarships. Tens of thousands nationally nationally every year, with many doing so in Tennessee. Complete information on the test specifications can be found at: http://www.frenchteachers.org/concours/gc_about/gc_specs.html.
Who can participate?
All K-12 students taking French in a given academic year are eligible to participate. Teachers are not required to be AATF members for their students to participate, although they benefit from a reduced entry fee.
Why should we participate?
The National French Contest is an opportunity to take French outside the normal classroom environment and make your students part of a nationally-recognized activity. It is also an excellent way to determine how your students perform according to specifications developed for every level at which French is taught. Finally, the Contest is an ideal way to highlight French at your own school, since at least one student from every school wins a prize.
When and where does it take place?
The AATF National French Contest from February through April every year. In Tennessee, the contest is administered in the individual schools that are participating. It is the responsibility of the teachers to determine when they will be able to have their students take the test. Any date in the range is possible.
How do I register my students?
You register your students online. The early deadline for registering for the online version is in mid-February. Links to the registration sites are on the chapter's contest homepage.
How much does it cost?
The registration fee per student is $10.00 for teachers who are not AATF members. Current members of AATF benefit from a reduced registration fee: $5.00 per student.
How do I determine the levels and divisions for my students?
Information about the levels and divisions is available at http://www.frenchteachers.org/concours/gc_about/gc_enroll.html.
How can I prepare my students?
Past versions of the Contest are available for review and practice purposes. Materials can be ordered through the Concours website at: http://frenchteachers.org/concours/Resources/Resources.html.
